Michael working at the forgeAll of my work is created using only traditional blacksmithing techniques and incorporating contemporary design. It is mainly either one-off pieces of sculpture, limited edition design items or uniquely designed and forged commissions. A lot of the enjoyment for me is creating something that is well made and crafted, yet interesting and beautiful, which means time to get it right. I take on all aspects of forge work from gates and railings to sculpture and all things in-between.

Influences are varied. Firstly what captured my interest in forge work was tool making. Being able to make your own tools gives a unique relationship between you and your work and influences everything about it. Also it helps to develop new ideas and skills. Industrial design throughout the last 200 years is a big influence, I find the proportion and balance of industrial design very interesting and I use bits of it in most of my work. A lot of my ideas are formulated while on long walks near my home in County Sligo. It is not hard to see things that inspire you in the Sligo landscape and tree forms have fascinated me since I was a small boy so they feature a lot too. The Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the arts and crafts movements have always been a draw as well. Then there is modern culture in general, the influences of which I can't escape.

I always encourage people to come and see me work and have a chat. So if you want to see more of my work or would just like to see what it's all about, why not pop into the forge (see Contact page for details).
